Description:
Abstract:
These data sets are geographically categorized by county and contain polygons designated as moderate, high, or extreme for
debris flow hazard. The polygons were derived from USGS 1:24,000 Scale Digital Elevation Model (DEM) at 30 meter pixel
interval using ArcView Spatial Analyst. The process for deriving the polygons included evaluating slope steepness, geologic
units, stream channel confinement, fan shaped geomorphology, historical information on debris flow occurrence, and the ""ODF
Storm Impacts and Landslides of 1996"" study. Please refer to the ""Western Oregon Debris Flow Hazard Maps"" for methodology
and guidance in the use of this data.
Purpose:
This is coarse scale data intended to include locations subject to naturally occurring debris flows and include the initiation sites
and locations along the paths of potential debris flows (confined stream channels and locations beneath steep slopes). This
data also includes those areas at risk for debris flow after landslide occurrence. This data classifies those areas where further
on-the-ground investigation is prudent prior to land management and development activities. Specific sites with a higher or
lower hazard exist in any of the hazard rating classifications. The data is intended as a screening tool and should not be used
to determine the actual hazard at any specific location.
Supplemental Information: Reprojected and clipped for use in the Oregon Coastal Atlas, 2004.

Process Step:
Process Description:
The initial hazard attribute values were developed by deriving slope from 1:24,000 scale USGS DEM's at 30 meter pixel interval. Moderate values were assigned to those areas having a slope greater than 40 percent and a total area greater than 150,000 sq. feet (approx. 3.5 acres). Initial high values were established based on geologic formation. For the Tyee and similar geologic formations those areas in excess of 100,000 sq. feet (approx. 2 acres) having a slope greater than 65 percent were assigned a high value. For other geologic units those areas in excess of 150,000 sq. feet having a slope greater than 70 percent received a high value. High values were further delineated by watershed analysis. Within the Tyee formation those basins having slope greater than 60 percent for more than one-third of the total area received a high value for the complete basin. For other geologic formations a high value was assigned to an entire basin where slope exceeded 70% for more than one-fourth of the total area of that basin. After initial hazard attribute values were determined, each set of polygons (both moderate and high) were buffered 200 feet around their perimeters to account for the coarseness of derived slope from the 30 meter DEM and to capture confined channels with lesser slope. Confined stream channels that run off of long lengths of steep slopes (high bluffs or mountains) were assigned a hazard rating based on the dominant hazard in the upper watershed from where they originated. These streams were buffered 100 feet from their midline to create polygons 200 feet wide. The length of run-out was determined by assessing channel confinement on 1:24,000 scale USGS topographic maps. In addition, identified fan-shaped landforms were assigned the same hazard as that of the up-slope hazard from where it originated. Extreme hazard values were only assigned to watersheds and landforms next to those watersheds which were known to have experienced multiple, very rapid moving debris flows over the past 35 years. Field checks were completed at various locations to assess mapping accuracy. The coarseness of the mapping process generally allows for error in the conservative direction. However, specific on-the-ground sites with higher or lower hazard exist within any of the hazard classifications.

Overview Description:
Entity and Attribute Overview:
The debris (debris flow hazard) data set consists of 22 Arcview polygon shapefiles. Each shapefile is named with a four letter abbreviation for the county in which the data resides with the exception of Lane and Douglas counties which are each divided into east and west by the I-5 corridor. Each shapefile is attributed for hazard, area, perimeter, and acres. The number of records is dependent on the range of hazard classification within the county. For most counties there will only be moderate and high classifications for the hazard attribute. For those counties having an extreme hazard the shapefile will consist of three records.
