Description:

Abstract:
Oregon distribution of anadromous salmon and steelhead, 1:24,000 scale.
These data describe areas of suitable habitat currently believed to be
used by wild, natural, and/or hatchery fish populations. The term
""currently"" is defined as within the past five reproductive cycles.
This information is based on the best professional judgment of ODFW
staff biologists and where possible, the professional opinions of staff from
other agencies.
These data are meant to supplement the ODFW 100K dataset for this species
and currently exist in point format to describe the uppermost endpoint
of distribution at the 1:24,000 scale as shown on the 1:24,000 scale
USGS quadrangles. These data will eventually be available in arc
and event format when the 24K routed hydrography becomes available for Oregon.
Areas displayed may not be used by a species of fish on an annual basis due
to natural variations in run size, water conditions, and other environmental
factors. The Natural Resources Information Management Program (ODFW) makes
no statement as to the validity of species absence in any particular area
unless the record is accompanied by a confidence rating (PUO, PSO, PMO) and
the name of the biologist who contributed the information.

Genetic origin and present production data have recently been added to the
distribution datasets. For an explanation of the categories and definitions, see
further below within the narrative section.

Supporting observation data (e.g. mapped fish survey locations) were
recently published in GIS format and are available under the
Observation - Sightings heading on the NRIMP Data Resources
web site. These data represent a partial compilation of existing
observation data. There are a limited number of cases where
documented observation records extend beyond (above) the
distribution data. Based on a preliminary review, NRIMP has
decided not to extend the distribution data for these records pending
more thorough evaluation of each individual case. For example, the
documentation record may be based on a ground measurement, such
as 'rivermile,' which doesn't translate accurately into the GIS. The
ground measures, in particular for streams of significant length, can
sometimes be greater than the GIS measures that are built into the
stream route system.

Purpose:
To map Oregon salmon and steelhead habitat distribution, including coho, chum, spring and fall chinook, summer and winter steelhead
at the 1:24,000 scale.

Supplemental Information:
Procedures_Used:
These data were created through a process where 1:24,000 hydrography maps
were plotted by USGS quadrangle pairs and then provided to ODFW and other
natural resources agency field staff. Based on survey data, supporting
documentation, and the best professional judgment of the field biologists,
the distribution of usetypes described above were marked on the maps with
colored pens. These hardcopy data were then heads-up digitized into an
ArcView point shapefile using the USGS quadrangle digital raster graphic
(DRG) files as backdrop. The shapefile data were converted into coverage
format using the SHAPEARC command.

Revisions:
This is the fourth iteration of these data. All anadromous zones in Oregon are
represented by these data.
Version 1 was created on Jan, 18, 2002 (Clackamas and Hood R. subbasins only)
Version 2 was created on March 31, 2002 (North Coast, John Day, Umatilla,
Upper Grande Ronde, and Enterprise areas updated)
Version 3 was created on June 3, 2002 (Upper and Mid Willamette, Santiam, and
Mid-coast areas updated, not including the McKenzie or Middle and Coast
forks of the Willamette.)
Version 4 was created on September 9, 2002 and includes data for all
anadromous zones in Oregon.
Version 5 was created on February 20, 2003 and includes origin and production
coding.
Version 6 was created on June 18, 2003 and includes additional point in the Umpqua basin and the Wasco county area. Changes have also been made to present production coding. Points that represent fish absence were removed from the version 5 datasets - they reside in their own datasets and can be acquired on the same Fish Distribution data page where this dataset is available.

Reviews_Applied_to_Data:
All distribution data have been reviewed at least twice by the ODFW field staff
(typically district biologists). The date of entry exists in the attribute
table for each distribution record.
