Description:
Abstract:
The Historic wetland data was mapped by Patricia Benner, interpreting land survey notes from 1857 - 1872. These data
were collected along public land survey section lines interpolating data in-between. The data was then digitized into Arc/Info using the pls section corners as control points. The coverage was then attributed using base map and items added to identify symbolic relations to NWI data layer. The classifications were matched as best as possible to NWI classifications. NWI data had to be generalized in many cases.
Purpose: To provide a snapshot of the historic extent of wetlands in the Coquille estuary for comparison to modern extents.

There are nearly 14,000 acres of vegetated wetlands in the Coquille floodplain and over 1,500 acres of deepwater habitat. The extent of vegetated wetlands in the bottomlands of the Coquille in the late 1800's is estimated as high as 25,000 acres although area calculations can not be considered accurate due to inventory methodology of the time. The significance of change over time however, can be observed in the change
in wetland type. While in the late 1800's nearly 70% of all wetlands were considered timbered swamp or wooded bottom lands the Coquille floodplain is currently dominated by emergent grasses or upland prairies (aprox. 90%). Historic and current wetland data were collected using two
different protocols, (as would be expected) making only a general comparison possible. Furthermore, source scale and method of data acquisition varies significantly. Methodology of comparison was carried out as follows. The Historic wetland data was mapped by Patricia Benner,
interpreting land survey notes from 1857 - 1872. These data were collected along public land survey section lines interpolating data in-between. The data was then digitized into Arc/Info using the pls section corners as control points. The coverage was then attributed using base map and items added to identify symbolic relations to NWI data layer. The classifications were matched as best as possible to NWI classifications. NWI data had to be generalized in many cases. The historic wetland data was classified as follows:
Marsh prairie
Timbered swamp with a brushy understory
Timbered swamp with coarse grass understory; Brush; wet and
miry, muck soil and large number of beaver.
Timbered swamp with coarse grass understory; Substantial
standing water and ponds Brush; wet and miry, muck soil and
large number of beaver.
Wooded bottomland, mostly floodplain.
Upland forest
Upland prairie
Sandy barrens with scattering of Pine
Marshy thicket
Flat, tidal land
Pine opening
Good grassland.
Sandy barrens with scattering of Pine, Pine opening and
Upland forest were omitted from the classification, as they
were not relevant in relation to the floodplain.
The above classifications were matched as appropriately as
possible with NWI classification

Historic and current wetland data were collected using two different protocols, (as would be expected) making only a

Methodology of comparison was carried out as follows. The Historic wetland data was mapped by Patricia Benner,
interpreting land survey notes from 1857 - 1872. These data were collected along public land survey section lines
interpolating data in-between. The data was then digitized into Arc/Info using the pls section corners as control
points. The coverage was then attributed using base map and items added to identify symbolic relations to NWI data
layer. The classifications were matched as best as possible to NWI classifications. NWI data had to be generalized in
many cases The NWI data was ""clipped"" to the extent of the original wetland data to facilitate direct overlay and subsequent areal calculations.
Once the two data sets had been standardized overlay processes could be utilized for analytical purposes. Each data set was rasterized (Arc/Info Grid) and each cell (10 meters) was assigned its respective value (according to NWI code). A Boolean calculation was carried out to determine areas of change. Due to the fact that the data sets varied in data acquisition and classification methodology, the results are meant solely as a possible scenario.
