Process Description:
FTP'd the export files prepared by Lance Finnegan (strcooscoq and streamrose) from BLM ftp site. The file 'strcooscoq' contained all needed streams except for 1quad. The file 'streamrose provided' the missing information. Clipped the file 'streamrose' to obtain only the missing quad, appended it with the file 'strcooscoq' to make a single coverage, performed matchnode command, and cleaned the coverage. There was a problem with values in item ""gradient"" (almost
all arcs were shown as having a -1 or 0 % gradient) so item was dropped and then recalculated using an AML from David
Hatfield in USFS Portland Regional Office. Metadata for this AML is appended below. Added an item called "lowgradient" and populated with 'lograd' where gradient <= 3 %.
Metadata for GRADIENT AML
&R GRADIENT <in_cover> <in_grid> {report_item} {in_info_file} {out_info_file}{z_factor}
calculates the gradient (slope) of lines in a line coverage, summarizes gradient by specified item, and then stores gradient in an info file.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
arguments <in_cover> - an existing line coverage (containing ARC and AAT files) for whose lines you wish gradient calculated.
<in_grid> - an existing grid whose cell values will be used to determine the elevation of the lines in <in_cover> so that the gradient of the lines can be calculated.
{report_item} - an existing item in the AAT file of <in_cover> by which you wish to summarize gradient. The default item is
<in_cover>-ID.
{in_info_file} - an existing INFO file to which you wish to add GRADIENT: the item which will contain the gradient calculation.
{in_info_file} must contain {report_item}. The default {in_info_file} is <in_cover>.AAT.
{out_info_file} - the name you wish to give to the new INFO file created by adding GRADIENT to {in_info_file}. If {out_info_file} already exists, it will be overwritten. The default {out_info_file} is {in_info_file}.
{z_factor} - the number of ground x,y UNITS in <in_cover> in 1 surface ZUNIT in <in_grid>. The ZUNITS are multiplied by
{z_factor} to convert then to ground UNITS. The default {z_factor} is 1 (no effect.)
notes * gradient is expressed in percent slope, i.e. the change in elevation of a line, divided by the length of the line,
multiplied by 100 (to express as a percentage.)
* change in elevation of a line is determined by taking the absolute (positive) value of the difference between the elevations of its to and from nodes.
* gradient is thus always positive.
* gradient is summarized by {report_item} by SUMming the change in elevation and the length of the lines for each unique
value in {report_item}, and then by dividing the SUM of the change in elevation by the SUM of the length, and multiplying by 100.
* Thus, each unique value in {report_item} will receive a gradient value.
* Some values for {z_factor} other than 1 (no effect) are .3048 (to convert from feet the meters if the ZUNITS in <in_grid>
are feet and the ground UNITS in <in_cover> are meters) and 3.28084 (to convert from meters to feet.)
* If GRADIENT already exists in {in_info_file}, you will be prompted whether or not you wish to overwrite it.
* TIN must be licensed in order for GRADIENT to work since LATTICESPOT (a TIN command) is used in GRADIENT.
* GRADIENT should be run from ARC.
example 1 In the first example, GRADIENT is used to calculate gradient for the streams in a line coverage called STREAMS. DEM is the name the elevation grid which encompasses the same area as does STREAMS. Gradient is summarized by the item STREAM_CLASS.
