About the Harbor Beach Rocky Shore Area

Description An approximately 3.5 mile stretch of coastline that is a combination of rocky intertidal and sandy beaches that extends from just south of the Chetco River on the north to the Winchuck River mouth on the Oregon-California border.		Designation The beaches and rocky shores of Oregon are part of Oregon’s Ocean Shore Recreation Area and the offshore rocks and islands are part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge.

Key Resources Extensive intertidal boulder and cobble habitat mixed in with sandy beaches and patchy offshore kelp beds.		What can you do here? Typical uses include sightseeing, surf fishing, and some tidepooling and clamming.

Crissey Field State Recreation Site is going to be developed to include a visitor’s center.

Getting to the Rocky shore at Harbor Beach

Beach access is possible from McVay Rock, Winchuck River and Crissey Field State Recreation Sites, all within Brookings/Harbor, on the far southern coast of Oregon.

Who Owns this Site?
Submerged and submersible (intertidal) lands: Division of State Lands; offshore rocks above Mean High Water: US Fish and Wildlife Service. The majority of the uplands within this section of coastline are privately owned, except for McVay Rocks State Recreation Site, Winchuck State Recreation Site, and Crissey Field State Recreation Site, which are owned by Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD).

Who Manages this Site?

McVay Rocks State Recreation Site, Winchuck State Recreation Site, and Crissey Field State Recreation Site owned and managed by Oregon Parks and Recreation Department as part of OPRD Area 4 and the Harris Beach Management Unit. Offshore rocks are managed by USFWS as part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
