Tools for Coastal Management

Tools help users acomplish common tasks. In the case of the Coastal Atlas tools list we've assembled links to a variety of tools created by NOAA, FEMA and others designed to help different types of coastal users answer questions that are common in coastal areas. In addition, we make available a series of Oregon topic-specific coastal tools constructed by Atlas partners though various grant opportunities.

Beach Water Quality

ImageWant to know the latest water quality test results for your favorite beach? This tool is built to allow the public to get access to the latest Beach Water Quality test results for their beach of interest. These data are collected by The Oregon Beach Monitoring Program (OBMP) which monitors selected Oregon coastal recreation waters for the presence of fecal bacteria, and reports elevated levels to the public.

Beach Public Access

ImageThe Oregon coastal access inventory is a detailed and accurate description of all public beach access points in Coastal Oregon. Under state mandate the public must have access to it's beaches and the local counties (where appropriate) are obligated to provide and maintain such access. The purpose of this tool is to have a detailed, highly accurate account of all public beach access locations along the Oregon coast.

Historical Maps & Charts

ImageThe NOAA Office of Coast Survey's Historical Map & Chart Collection contains over 20,000 maps and charts from the late 1700s to present day. The Collection includes some of the nation's earliest nautical charts, hydrographic surveys, topographic surveys, geodetic surveys, city plans and Civil War battle maps. The Collection is a rich primary historical archive and a testament to the artistry of copper plate engraving technology of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

NOS Data Explorer

NOS MapfinderThe NOS Data Explorer serves as a portal to obtain NOS spatial data including bathymetry, coastal maps, environmental sensitivity index maps, aerial photographs, and more. This site allows users to search NOS data holdings, view metadata, and link to and/or download specific data sets. Data Explorer offers interactive mapping tools that allow users to locate NOS products in any area in the United States and its territories through a metadata catalog.

Coastal Inundation Visualization

ImageCoastal Oregon is impacted by coastal storms that have caused erosion, flooding, and other impacts to communities. To improve forecasting and observation capabilities, and to assist in preparation for and awareness of coastal storms, the Oregon Coastal Inundation Visualization Tool was developed. This tool uses real-time data to project potential wave inundation along the ocean shore near Tillamook, Oregon.

Coastal Risk and Vulnerability Assessment Tool

ImageA risk and vulnerability assessment helps to identify people, property, and resources that are at risk of injury, damage, or loss from hazardous incidents or natural hazards. This information is important to help determine and prioritize the precautionary measures that can make a community more disaster-resistant.

OrCOOS Near-Real Time Data

Image The OrCOOS website facilitates the access to of a wide variety of near real-time ocean observing and modeling systems. Examples of the source platforms that OrCOOS data products are derrived from include moorings, undersea autonomous vehicles, a land-based surface current mapping and wave detection radar array, and “nowcast” and “forecast” fields of sea surface currents and temperature derived from an ocean circulation model.

LIDAR Data Retrieval Tool

ImageThe LIDAR Data Retrieval Tool (LDART) is a Web-based application that the NOAA Coastal Services Center developed to allow its customers to obtain topographic LIDAR data from its archive. LDART allows users to customize their output data set, interactively choosing geographic boundaries, projections, horizontal and vertical datums, and output file formats. LDART can be used by coastal managers, coastal geologists, and the general public to generate custom elevation data sets for use in decision making, research, and for general information.

West Coast Habitat Portal

Image The West Coast Habitat Portal is a component of the Pacific Coast Ocean Observing System (PaCOOS) and serves up a variety of important marine datasets from a network of data providers including NOAA Fisheries National Marine Fisheries Service, NOAA National Marine Sanctuaries Program, Pacific States Marine Fisheries Comission as well as Oregon State University's Active Tectonics and Seafloor Mapping Lab. Available data include bathymetry, coastlines, bouy data, fish and invertebrate datasets, habitat maps, geologic and tectonic maps, sonar imagery, sediment sample data, tsunami inundation lines and ocean climatologies, among others.

V-Datum Transformation Tool

ImageVDatum is a tool developed by the Office of Coast Survey for the transformation of elevation data from one vertical datum into another. Such transformations are necessary when data from diverse sources are to be combined or compared. Artificial steps or discontinuties can appear in maps and charts if they are built from data based on inconsistent datums. This problem can be particularly acute in coastal areas.
